Ahhh spooky season! The chill of autumn and the onset of the holidays… I loved October. This was a very fun and busy month of travel and events for me. Be sure to read to the end of this post for a BIG RUNAWAYS ANNOUNCEMENT! I had several large work commitments which took up a large portion of my time at the beginning of the month, but I also got to help my fiance run a table at a craft fair. He…

Hello !
À chaque fois, ça a échoué. Pourquoi ?
By-bye !

Anyway, since the death of Finale has brought me back to this blog, I'll give an update: I let myself slide :/
It's not a huge deal, or at least, I'm not making a huge deal of it. I figure I'm allowed a break every once in a while, and sometimes that break will end up lasting a few months. It's okay. I want my weekly goals to be something I can feel comfortable picking up again after I've not done them for a while. The whole point of all of this is no guilt. Guilt is the creativity-killer.
But in fact, both last week and this week, I have met my weekly goal (which, as a reminder, is literally just to do one thing, any one thing, related to composition or furthering my composing career during the week). I've started on a new choral piece! We're still very early in the process, but I like the melodic ideas I have so far, and I've got a good overall sense of what the form looks like.
As for monthly goals, I think I've decided to let that go for the year. Trying to keep up with that was starting to stress me out. I'd still like to do more tiktok collabs and stock music projects, but for right now, I'm not putting that on a timeline.
Still no word on codename canticum antiquum, and I'm starting to worry about that again. The new season of symphony chorus will be starting soon, so either I'll hear something by then, or it might be time to send another polite inquiry.
And finally, I'm just starting to think about gearing up for Notevember again. Last year, I came up with the prompt list by playing around with online random word generators while bored at work, and that technique worked pretty well. Not every word that comes up is a good music prompt, but eventually you end up with a good number of words that are. Seems like it's about time to get going on that. Also, I have to decide if I want to change the Notevember logo. I feel like it should be at least a little different in some way. Maybe it should be colorful this time? Much to consider...

August 2024 Monthly Goals
Can you believe we’re already at August? There still feels like a lot of summer left, but I am also planning out all my kids’ activities for fall and starting to get the back to school emails, so I know it’ll be here before we know it. I hate how fast we jump to the next season rather than allowing the current one to be savored, but I also know that it’s time to look ahead a bit to fall and make…

My goals for this month are simple:
Lose a solid 4 kilos. Surpassing the goal would be great too, but I'm keeping my goals realistic and achievable.
60 minutes of any form of intentional movement at least 5 days a week. Can be a combination of different forms of exercise throughout the day.
Positive affirmations in the morning at least 5 days a week.
Choose minimally processed foods most of the time and choose mostly complex carbs when including them in my diet.
Have a protein shake 3 times a week. The protein powder I got is overwhelmingly sweet no matter what I do with it but I need to go through it before buying another one (I'll be smart and get a sampler pack form another brand next time 😅).

Well it's the end of May, and for my monthly goal... well I did successfully post the Notevember "wander" prompt to my Pond5 account. It's now titled "A Tune for Wandering." I began reworking the "gravel" prompt, but haven't done that much with it yet. But altogether, it's enough that I can say I met the goal.
There's another possible performance opportunity I'm working toward now that involves reworking something I wrote a few years ago. I'm revoicing it for SSA chorus rather than SATB, and also reconfiguring my use of the text. The original uses a selection of four stanzas from a longer poem, and I'm thinking of including more of the text, and introducing a bridge section so the form isn't entirely strophic. My original setting of four verses is about as far as I would prefer to extend one repeated melody without some kind of contasting idea to break it up and give the whole piece a more compelling shape.
No word on codename canticum antiquum yet, and it's starting to make me feel antsy. I'm trying to decide if I should send an email about it. Maybe next week.

May 2024 Wrap-Up Post
May has been one of those months that felt twice as long as it should. I feel like I’m finally hitting my stride with The Reanimator’s Remains, and I don’t want to jinx anything, but things are finally going smoothly. Before getting into things, let’s take a look at the goals I made for May. Writing goals are as follows: minimum 15k words standard 20k words stretch 25k words Finish outlining…
